707 Skyward : £17.95 : 111 minutes

Royal Australian Air Force Boeing 707 A20-261 was awaiting the scrapper at RAAF Amberley in Queensland, Australia when Tom Vaughan, boss of Turbine Motor Works, decided to try to rescue it.

A year later, Tom and a team of engineers headed out to Amberley, together with our camera crew, whom Tom had asked to record the project. Sent on ahead were four JT3Ds and the heavy equipment needed to re-engine the 707 and get it back in the air.

Our unrestricted access to every aspect of the restoration of the 707 gives you an amazing insight into how a fifties jetliner works, plus a real sense of being there, as we go through the highs and lows of engine runs, rejected take-offs, bug-fixing and flight testing.

Then all we had to do was get back home. Just crossing Australia to Darwin took nearly four hours. Next day, we left for the Maldives, surviving oil leaks and a 90 degree, 23 knot, crosswind when landing at Male. Then on to Cairo and finally Manston in Kent. Again, Tom’s wish to record the event gave us superb access; three cameras in the cockpit and two in the cabin, where we even removed several rows of seats to get a better view!

Refining our 32 hours of film into a more manageable record, led to the idea of this DVD, which also supports the long term future of the 707 and Tom’s ambition to enable the general public to fly on it and share the adventure.

The DVD was filmed mainly in High Definition video, creating simply stunning images that will play perfectly on any standard DVD player and TV anywhere in the world.

DVD formats explained

There are several different kinds of DVD available so here's a simple guide.

DVDs are 'pressed' from a master disc.

DVD-Rs are 'burnt' from a master DVD, just like copying one CD to another.

DVDs and DVD-Rs will play in any computer DVD drive [but not in a CD drive].

All our DVDs/DVD-Rs are 'region-free', so they will play anywhere in the world. However, if you're not watching your DVDs on a computer, you will need to ensure they are compatible with your national TV system. There are two main types; PAL and NTSC.

PAL TV is used in the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and many other Commonwealth countries. PAL DVDs are therefore the obvious choice for those countries.

Because PAL DVD players will also play NTSC DVDs without any adverse effect on picture quality, DVDs that were filmed in NTSC are now released as PAL/NTSC DVDs, as the same format can be used world-wide.

NTSC TV systems are used in the USA, Canada, Japan and some other countries. If you have a multi-system DVD player, this will play either NTSC or PAL DVDs, and you should also buy our PAL DVDs and PAL/NTSC DVDs.

Most US DVD players are multi-region, not multi-system, and you will need to buy our NTSC DVD-Rs and PAL/NTSC DVDs.

Some early DVD players would not play DVD-Rs. If you buy a DVD-R from us and it is not compatible with your DVD player, we will provide a full refund, including your postage.
